Good show John, I particularly liked the advice about treating your business with the same sense of single-mindedness as your home.

Poor staff behaviour is a good example of this. I am always flabbergasted by the stuff that happens in clinics everyday that upsets the owner, but they do nothing as it takes courage (and a clear vision) to correct behaviours or activities that are damaging your long term success.

I know, as I’ve felt the fear as well…but the first step forward is the toughest.

    God proactive advice as always.

    Keep ‘em coming John.

Some feedback received via the http://www.linkedin.com ‘My Veterinary Career’ Group in response to the link to Episode 48
    - from Brigitta van der Sandt -Senior veterinary sister at Cape Animal Medical Centre, Cape Town Area, South Africa – says ‘I think you are very right, and I think that some vets should send their staff to basic business practice courses as well, so that they think about what they do and why’
    - from Stephen Tracey – General Manager at Princeton Animal Hospital, Greater New York City Area – says ‘Great Episode all the way around. Attitude is everything’.
    - from Phil Sproat – Team-oriented Regional Operations Manager | Culture Builder, Relationship Manager, Profit Maximizer, and Leader, Cleveland Ohio – says ‘John- In my previous role I visited practices across the US. I would speculate I saw close to 200 practices. I would further surmise that I saw a budget in about a half a dozen locations, and a business / operating plan in even fewer locations, or less than 5% of hospitals. Occasionally there were goals posted, As a rule the owner was only vaguely aware of these objectives though. It was “just something the PM did”. I was amazed at the number of practices I saw in excess of 2 million dollars in gross annual revenues who’s business plan was to live to unlock the doors and turn on the lights the next day. Budgeting can actually be simple. It’s as easy as starting with a couple of annualized cash flow statements and taking some historical data from the software. The trick is buying into it the plan and holding the teams accountable to the results.
