Hi John -
Another great video. The financial questions are great! Veterinary business owners here in the US really seem to shy away from budgets – like “budget” is a BAD word. I see very few practices using them. Do you see the same issue in the UK?
John Sheridan February 6th
Many thanks again Nikki
Yes we do see the same in the UK but I think slowly but surely practices owners are seeing the benefits of budgeting, particularly when they discover that they need not be too difficult, complex or time consuming. The key is to estabish a few major financial objectives then use a simple tool to creat a draft P&L. The management task then is to plan a few operational policies in detail to ensure as far as possible that the objectives convert to reality
All the best
John

Hi John, interesting and challenging thoughts as always. Loved the leadership segment. While I am not a doom and gloom guy, am worried about declining veterinary visits and the disappearing feline client especially. While the fee itself may not be the entire issue, the perception of those fees in relation to value certainly is now widespread in the pet owning public. As a travelling speaker, like yourself, I listen to lots of pet owners on airplanes, who still like their veterinary clinic, but today almost every one of them discusses their perception of the high cost of veterinary care. We need to make sure our practices are efficient and effective plus our service quality matches the medical quality so the value can be matched in the client’s mind, with the fee. I believe we need to find ways to keep the cost/price of preventive care in line with pet owner’s ability/willingness to pay. Easy to say, hard to accomplish.

Many thanks Clayton – very much appreciate your feedback.I entirely agree with your comments about quality and efficiency. On the other hand, if your discussions on an airplane related to banking, doctors, dentists, builders, decorators, garages, lawyers, accountants, hairdressers or almost every other professional or service provider, don’t you think most of your fellow passengers would still discuss their perception of the high costs nowadays?
